ECMA 2018 & Gear Update!

It is a big honour for us to receive the ECMA Recording Studio of the Year award earlier this month and a giant Thank You goes out to all the artists who have made this such a wonderful place to work. We would like to join in with the celebration of Mo Kenney’s record “The Details,” which took home Solo Recording of the Year. Also sending congratulations to Joel Plaskett, who walked home with Songwriter of the Year honours. Click here for a list of all winners & nominees.

We’ve also been getting some new gear up and running here: a Peluso P49 microphone, a surprisingly smooth modern tube condenser microphone, modelled after the Neumann M49 of yesteryear; and a Studer A80 1/2″ 2-track tape machine, the crown jewel of analog hi-fi, and boy does it sound good! We just turned out our first mixes through the machine with Halifax’s Bend The River and we could not be more excited about the sound of the machine.

Nova Scotia Music Week

What an incredible showcase of talent this weekend was! Music Nova Scotia and the City of Yarmouth did a great job putting on the event, and I can tell you first-hand that everyone enjoyed themselves! I am in awe of how many world-class acts I saw this weekend; and all from our own backyard.

We at the ‘Yard are very pleased and excited to have taken home a couple Nova Scotia Music Awards this weekend! We wear proudly the titles of Studio of the Year and Studio Engineer of the Year, and are humbled by the support we have received from friends, family, artists, and organisations. Thank you all very much! We are happy to work hard for our community. Joel also took home Producer of the Year and Entertainer of the Year!

Perhaps the best part of the weekend was seeing all our friends being recognised for their hard work! Certainly we mean everyone when we say that, but we had the great fortune to work on a number of releases that won awards this year: Mo Kenney took home 4 awards on the night, including Recording of the Year, which she shares with Gabrielle Papillon; Gypsophilia garnered 2 awards for Group Recording and Jazz Recording; Roxy & The Underground Soul Sound were winners in Urban Recording and New Artist Recording categories; and Old Man Leudecke won in the Americana/Bluegrass genre.

And most importantly, thank you all for another great year of music! Keep it comin’!
